Things worth knowing

  • A whole 400 g can has 788 kcal / 3297 kJ; a quarter cup (56.5 g) has 111 kcal / 466 kJ and a tablespoon 30 kcal / 124 kJ.
  • Carton coconut milk drinks are mostly water: a sweetened, fortified version lists 31 kcal per 100 g, about one-sixth of the energy of canned coconut milk.
  • Light coconut milk is canned coconut milk with more water added, so it is lower in fat and energy. Brands vary widely, so check the kJ or kcal on the label.
  • Coconut cream is richer still, with 330 kcal and 35 g of fat per 100 g for the raw product, so recipes using cream instead of milk are noticeably higher in energy.
