Calories in sweets and snacks

Sweets and snacks are energy-dense by design: sugar, fat and very little water. Most land between 300 and 600 kcal per 100 g. The interesting differences are in what provides the energy, with sugar and syrups almost pure carbohydrate, chocolate and cookies a mix of sugar and fat, and plain air-popped popcorn a whole grain with real fibre.

Typical traits of sweets and snacks

  • Low water, high energy. With little or no water to dilute them, sweets pack a lot of kilojoules into small portions.
  • Sugar and fat dominate. Honey, syrups and sugar are almost pure carbohydrate; chocolate, cookies, donuts and chips add substantial fat.
  • Quick energy. Simple sugars are absorbed fast, which is useful during long exercise and less so at a desk.
  • Not all snacks are equal. Air-popped popcorn and dark chocolate bring fibre; many others bring little beyond energy.
  • Portion labels matter. A single cookie or a teaspoon of sugar is small, but bag- and tub-sized portions add up quickly.
