Nutella hazelnut spread has 539 kcal (2,252 kJ) per 100 g, close to chocolate itself. More than half of its weight is sugar, 56 g per 100 g, and almost a third is fat, mainly from palm oil and hazelnuts. That makes it one of the most energy-dense spreads you can put on toast, even though a single portion looks small.

Things worth knowing

  • Ferrero's European portion is 15 g, about one heaped teaspoon, which has 80 kcal (336 kJ). The US label uses 2 tablespoons (37 g) at 200 kcal.
  • Hazelnuts make up only around 13% of the recipe; sugar and palm oil are the main ingredients, so it is closer to a chocolate spread than a nut butter.
  • Compared with smooth peanut butter, Nutella has about 40% less fat but roughly six times the sugar and only a quarter of the protein.
  • A slice of white toast (about 25 g) with a 15 g portion comes to roughly 150 kcal in total.
