Things worth knowing
- One tablespoon (15 g) has about 51 kcal (213 kJ), a 30 ml splash about 101 kcal (424 kJ), and a full cup (238 g) about 809 kcal (3386 kJ).
- UK double cream is usually richer than US heavy cream, so check the fat percentage on the label. Australian thickened cream is close to heavy cream in fat but contains added thickeners.
- Lighter creams cut the energy sharply: light whipping cream has about 292 kcal per 100 g, sour cream about 198 and half-and-half about 131.
- Whipping incorporates air and roughly doubles the volume, so a spoonful of whipped cream holds noticeably fewer calories than the same spoonful of liquid cream.
