Shrimp, called prawns in the UK and Australia, is one of the leanest protein foods you can buy. Cooked shrimp has 99 kcal (414 kJ) per 100 g, and almost all of that comes from protein: 24 g, with well under 1 g of fat and virtually no carbohydrate. The rest is water, which is why a generous serving stays low in energy.

Things worth knowing

  • A 3 oz (85 g) serving of cooked shrimp has about 84 kcal (352 kJ) and 20 g of protein. One large cooked shrimp is only about 7 kcal (29 kJ), so ten come to roughly 69 kcal.
  • Breading and frying changes the picture completely: breaded fried shrimp has about 242 kcal per 100 g in USDA data, around two and a half times plain cooked shrimp, with 12 g of fat.
  • Raw shrimp has about 85 kcal per 100 g. Cooking adds no energy; it drives out water, so the same shrimp weighs less and the per-100 g figure rises.
  • Shrimp is unusually high in dietary cholesterol for such a lean food, about 189 mg per 100 g, while its saturated fat is almost negligible at under 0.1 g.
