Avocado is the rare fruit whose calories come mostly from fat rather than sugar. Almost 70 percent of that fat is monounsaturated, largely oleic acid, the same fatty acid that dominates olive oil.

Things worth knowing

  • At 160 kcal per 100 g, avocado is roughly three times as calorie-dense as most fruit. A whole medium Hass avocado yields about 200 g of flesh and around 320 kcal.
  • Its 6.7 g of fibre per 100 g is unusually high for a fruit, and most of it is insoluble.
  • Because fibre is subtracted differently in different systems, some labels show avocado slightly lower in calories than the USDA figure.
  • Avocado is a strong source of potassium: 100 g supplies more than the same weight of banana.
