Black coffee, brewed with water and served without milk or sugar, is almost calorie-free: 100 g has about 1 kcal (4 kJ), and even a large 355 ml mug comes to roughly 4 kcal (15 kJ). The traces of energy come from tiny amounts of protein and oil extracted from the beans. Espresso is similar. The calories in coffee drinks come from what is added.

Things worth knowing

  • Espresso is slightly more concentrated than filter coffee: USDA lists it at about 9 kcal per 100 g, which is still only around 3 kcal (11 kJ) in a 30 ml shot.
  • Milk and sugar are where the calories come from: a tablespoon of whole milk adds about 9 kcal (38 kJ) and a level teaspoon of white sugar about 16 kcal (68 kJ).
  • An 8 fl oz (240 ml) cup of brewed coffee contains roughly 96 mg of caffeine, though the real amount varies with the beans, grind and brewing method.
  • Milk-based coffees are a different category: a whole-milk cappuccino has about 27 kcal per 100 g, or about 130 kcal (542 kJ) for a 16 fl oz medium.
