Coca-Cola, usually just called Coke and sold in the US as Coca-Cola Original (formerly Coca Cola Classic), has 140 kcal (586 kJ) in a 12 fl oz (355 ml) can. All of that energy is sugar: 39 g per can, about 11 g per 100 ml, with no fat or protein. That makes it one of the clearest examples of liquid calories, energy that arrives without any fibre or protein to fill you up.

Things worth knowing

  • The UK and EU recipe lists 42 kcal (180 kJ) and 10.6 g of sugar per 100 ml, slightly more than the US figure, so a 330 ml European can is about 139 kcal.
  • A 20 fl oz (591 ml) bottle carries about 240 kcal and 65 g of sugar, more than twice the energy of a medium banana.
  • One 355 ml can contains 34 mg of caffeine, less than half the amount in a typical cup of brewed coffee.
  • Diet Coke and Coke Zero Sugar replace the sugar with sweeteners and drop the energy to effectively zero.
