Orange juice, freshly squeezed, provides 45 kcal (188 kJ) per 100 g, almost all from natural sugars. It is a rich source of vitamin C, at about 50 mg per 100 g, and also supplies potassium and folate. Pressing the juice leaves most of the fibre behind with the pulp and membranes, so the sugars are absorbed faster than from a whole orange.

Things worth knowing

  • One cup (240 ml) has about 112 kcal / 467 kJ and around 124 mg of vitamin C, more than the full 90 mg Daily Value; a small 150 ml glass is about 70 kcal / 292 kJ.
  • A whole orange has about 47 kcal and 2.4 g of fibre per 100 g (a medium orange is about 62 kcal); juice has just 0.2 g of fibre, so a glass is less filling than the fruit.
  • Chilled juice from concentrate is very close at 49 kcal per 100 g, so fresh and carton juice are similar in energy.
  • "No added sugar" does not mean low in sugar: plain orange juice contains about 8 g of natural sugar per 100 g.
